Expectation vs. Reality: Life in Poland 🇵🇱 Pierogi, vodka, and... taking off your shoes? 👞 Cześć! I often hear from my students that Poland is full of surprises. Before they started lessons, they had some "stereotypes" in mind, but the reality is much more interesting (and sometimes funnier!). Here are 3 things that surprised my students the most about living in Poland: 1️⃣ Vodka is not our "water" 🍸 Despite the stereotypes, we don’t drink vodka with every meal! Actually, Poles are huge tea lovers (herbaciarze). You'll find that offering someone a cup of tea is the ultimate sign of Polish hospitality. 2️⃣ The "Shoes Off" Rule 👟 In Poland, your host’s floor is sacred! Taking off your shoes immediately after entering a home is a must. Don't be surprised if you are offered kapcie (guest slippers) – they might not match your outfit, but they are a sign of a warm welcome! 3️⃣ Imieniny > Urodziny? 🎂 Many students are confused by "Name Days." In Poland, Imieniny are a big deal, especially for the older generation. Sometimes people celebrate their Name Day more than their birthday! It’s another great excuse to eat cake and meet friends. Learning a language is not just about grammar cases. It’s about understanding the soul of the country and its people. What is it like in your country? What surprised you the most about Poland or the Polish language? I’m looking forward to your comments!

iTalki is a calendar service with an in-built teach catalogue. That all it is, and all it should ever be. While the old design had it's flaws, it at least tried to support iTalki's only two functions. A big list of teachers and a convenient way to book lesson. The new design spectacularly fails at both. The % of the dash board screen that is assigned to my upcoming calendar is TINY. Instead when you log in it defaults you to an almost full screen chat window taking up 90% of the screen space when a budget LLM will not stop messaging you with garbage. The "Let's get a useless LLM to regurgitate platitudes at users each time they log in and not let them turn it off ever" is sooo bad and off-putting. Should you use most of the screen space to show me upcoming bookings? You know, the entire reason I use iTalki? No, of course not, we'll shoe horn in a terrible LLM that provides no value and hide your bookings in a tiny panel on the left ... because our intern saw discord and decided the "calendar bookings are just like discord servers am I right?" and somehow that got approved. It in no way helps me see upcoming bookings clearly at all, purchased lesson packages are also way more obscure , and it certainly doesn't help me find teachers - so the new layout actively makes the site far worse to use for it's only actual functions. Why is the calendar now gone to it's own little tab hidden inside a `...` menu option instead of being the main dashboard page? Why can't I book lessons via the calendar page? Isn't booking lessons the ENTIRE POINT OF THE SITE? Just be a really good calendar app and teach catalogue again please. I don't care about the AI or the fish at all, they can exist if they must, but the fact the main reason to spend money on the site has been so severely gutted is just a tragedy.
